Quant Notebook

You already build systems that ingest data, train models and ship to production. Quantitative finance asks you to do the same thing in the one domain where the data is adversarial, the signal is faint, and every mistake has a price tag. This course is the whole path — markets, math, data, research discipline, portfolios, derivatives, machine learning, execution and live trading — taught the way engineers learn best: a mental model, a picture, and code you can run.

DURATION ~300 h (100 sessions × 1.5 h + labs) UNITS 16 SESSIONS 100 LEVEL Engineer → professional quant
📌 Start here

New here? Read Start here first (15 minutes: tracks, lab setup, how sessions work). Then open Session 1.1 — What Quants Actually Do and work forward — every session builds on the ones before it, and the roadmap shows exactly which.

⚠️ The honest part

No course can make you profitable, and you should distrust anyone who says theirs can. Most people who trade actively lose money; most backtests that look brilliant fail live; most published "factors" shrink after publication. What can be taught is the process professionals use to find an edge, prove it is real, size it, execute it and survive being wrong — and the honesty to walk away when the evidence says so. That is what this course teaches. Nothing here is investment advice.

Map The whole journey

Sixteen units in five phases. Each phase ends with something you can show — a data lake, a strategy report that survives overfitting statistics, a risk-managed portfolio, a live paper-trading system, and a capstone.

fig 0.1 — the five phases of Quant Notebook, from foundations to a professional practice

The order is deliberate. Markets, data and statistics come first because every later mistake starts there. Research discipline — backtesting, validation and overfitting statistics — comes before factors, strategies and machine learning, because those are exactly the places where untrained researchers fool themselves. Derivatives, rates and microstructure run as their own tracks on top of that foundation.

How How every session works

One hundred sessions, one rhythm: understand it, see it, derive it, run it, test yourself, then use it.

ONE SESSION ≈ 1.5 H OF READING + A COMPANION LAB 1 · SEE IT mental model + diagrams 2 · DERIVE IT intuition first, then the math 3 · RUN IT the lab — every number on the page comes from it 4 · CHECK IT scenario questions with the why 5 · USE IT homework + go deeper Pictures build the model, the lab makes it real, the questions make it stick.
fig 0.2 — the rhythm of every session

Every session page links its companion lab — a Python notebook you can open in Colab with one click, or run locally from the repository. The labs use a small teaching package, quantnb, and seeded synthetic data by default, so they run anywhere, offline, in minutes, and always give the numbers the page quotes.

Tracks Pick your route

The spine — Units 1 to 6 and Unit 9 — is for everyone. Beyond it, weight your time by the job you want.

Unit 1 The Quant Landscape

Phase 1 · Foundations — 5 sessions · Foundations · tracks QR · QT · QD · IND

📌 The thread through this unit

Quant finance is engineering for decisions under uncertainty with money on the line — and the job is mostly not fooling yourself.

Unit 2 Markets & Instruments

Phase 1 · Foundations — 7 sessions · Foundations · tracks QR · QT · QD · IND

Currency quoting, forwards and covered interest parity; commodity term structures, storage and convenience yield.

→ session05-fx-commodities.html
Unit 2 · Session 6

→ session06-crypto-market-structure.html
Unit 2 · Session 7

Options Primer

Calls, puts, payoffs, put-call parity, intrinsic vs time value, and a first look at implied volatility — enough to read any options discussion.

→ session07-options-primer.html
📌 The thread through this unit

Every instrument is a contract with a cash-flow profile — learn the plumbing and the P&L arithmetic before you model anything.

Unit 3 The Quant Math Toolkit

Phase 1 · Foundations — 6 sessions · Foundations · tracks QR · QT · QD · IND

📌 The thread through this unit

The math is a toolkit, not a hurdle — every tool here earns its place by answering a trading question.

Unit 4 Financial Data Engineering

Phase 1 · Foundations — 6 sessions · Foundations · tracks QR · QD · IND

Unit 4 · Session 1

The Data Landscape, Vendors & Licensing

Bars, ticks, quotes, books, fundamentals and macro — who sells what, what it costs, and what the licence lets you do with it.

coming soon
Unit 4 · Session 2

Point-in-Time Data & Data Biases

Look-ahead, survivorship, restatements, vintages and delistings — the data biases that manufacture fake alpha, and how to engineer them out.

coming soon
Unit 4 · Session 3

Corporate Actions, Security Master & Continuous Futures

Adjust prices correctly, keep identifiers straight through ticker changes, and stitch futures into continuous series without inventing returns.

coming soon
Unit 4 · Session 4

Time, Calendars, As-of Joins & Bars

Timestamps and time zones, exchange calendars, as-of joins that never peek, and information-driven bars (volume, dollar, imbalance).

coming soon
Unit 4 · Session 5

Parquet, Arrow, DuckDB and polars — a fast, local, columnar research stack — plus when kdb+ and managed warehouses earn their cost.

coming soon
Unit 4 · Session 6

Lab: Build Your Research Data Lake

Build an idempotent, tested, point-in-time data pipeline with quality checks and lineage — the foundation for every later lab.

coming soon
📌 The thread through this unit

Your backtest can only be as honest as your data — point-in-time, or it didn't happen.

Unit 5 Statistics & Time Series of Returns

Phase 2 · Research Craft — 7 sessions · Intermediate · tracks QR · QT · IND

Unit 5 · Session 1

Unit 6 Backtesting & Research Discipline

Phase 2 · Research Craft — 8 sessions · Intermediate · tracks QR · QT · QD · IND

Unit 6 · Session 1

What a Backtest Is (and Isn't)

Signals to positions to returns in a few lines of pandas/polars — and the shift discipline that keeps the future out.

coming soon
Unit 6 · Session 3

Pre-register a hypothesis, log every trial, sweep parameters, score them with PBO and DSR, and write the go/no-go memo.

coming soon
